Nwentoma: Visual Notes From West Africa is a collection of photographic fragments and impressions from Togo, Senegal, Ghana, and Burkina Faso collected by freelance photographer Olivier Asselin during the last two years living in Accra, Ghana. Nwentoma (pronounced nu-en-to-ma) is an Akan word denoting the handmade woven Kente cloth of Ghana. West Africa’s richly coloured and patterned culture, like the cloth, has been a woven over centuries from thousands of unique cultural threads. Asselin’s photographic images do not deny the complex problems that West African society faces, but they focus more on the brave potential of a people rich in customs, festivals, music, and daily ritual. Asselin hopes that his photographs will bring us all closer to a meaningful understanding of a frequently misunderstood part of the world. Limited edition, signed by the author.
